Sirius Black (in früheren Übersetzungen des ersten Bandes als Sirius Schwarz bezeichnet) war der beste Freund von James Potter, Trauzeuge auf dessen Hochzeit mit Lily und Harrys Taufpate. In seiner Schulzeit war er mit James, Remus Lupin und Peter Pettigrew eng befreundet. Die vier bildeten die Rumtreiber (englisch: Marauder). Aus Freundschaft zu Remus, der ein Werwolf ist, wurden die anderen drei Animagi. Sirius verwandelt sich in einen großen, zotteligen, schwarzen Hund. Daher rührt auch sein Spitzname „Tatze“. Sirius war in der Schule sehr beliebt, ist außerordentlich klug und war zusammen mit James für seine Streiche bekannt. Er riss als 16-Jähriger von zu Hause aus und lebte eine Zeit lang bei James’ Familie.
