Um 1450 war das lange Schwert, das oft als "eineinhalb" bezeichnet wurde, im Krieg weit verbreitet, aber es war auch oft eine Selbstverteidigungswaffe für Zivilisten. Verbunden mit einem Dolch war es hervorragend gegen Diebe, Räuber und Attentäter, die oft in Banden organisiert waren, die durch die Landschaft zogen.

Ausgestattet mit einem guten Tip und ausreichender Länge, konnte der Gegner auf Distanz gehalten werden.
